Two-minute self-check

How ready is your company for a cyber attack?

Answer ten yes/no questions. You get a readiness score out of 10 and a list of gaps to raise with providers. Your answers stay in your browser.

  • Company size and number of devices set the scope of any protection.
  • One-time tests and ongoing monitoring are different services. Decide which you need.
  • Cloud accounts such as email and shared files need protecting as much as the office network.
  • People matter: many attacks start with a convincing email.
Do all staff use multi-factor authentication for email and remote access?
Do you keep an offline or locked backup, and have you tested a restore this year?
Are Windows, servers and key software updated within a few weeks of each release?
Is your internet connection behind a managed firewall with up-to-date rules?
Does every PC and laptop run managed endpoint protection?
Are admin rights limited to a few named people?
Is incoming email filtered for phishing and harmful attachments?
Have staff had security awareness training in the last twelve months?
Are accounts of people who leave closed on their last day?
Do you have a written plan for who does what if you are hacked?

Gaps to ask providers about0

Answer “No” to any point you don’t have yet and it appears here.

A self-check, not an audit. A provider confirms the real picture with an assessment or a penetration test.

Buyer checklist

How to choose a cybersecurity provider

Security work is hard to judge from a price alone. These six points show whether a proposal is serious.

  1. Scope in writing.Which systems, sites, websites and cloud accounts are covered, and which are not.
  2. A real report.Findings ranked by risk with clear fixes — not just the raw output of a scanning tool.
  3. Qualified people.Ask which certifications the team doing your work holds, such as OSCP or CISSP.
  4. Rules of engagement. For testing: agreed dates, systems off-limits, and your signed approval before they start.
  5. Data handling.Where your logs and findings are stored, who can see them, and when they are deleted.
  6. Response times. For monitoring: how fast they act on an alert, and whether cover is round the clock.

Words you will hear in every proposal.

Testing

Vulnerability scan or penetration test?

A vulnerability scan is an automated check for known weaknesses. A penetration test is a specialist trying to break in by hand, the way an attacker would. Scans are quicker and repeatable; tests go deeper. Ask which one a quote really includes.

Services

One-time project or ongoing service?

An assessment tells you where you stand today. Ongoing services — managed firewall, endpoint protection, monitoring by a SOC — keep watching after that. Many companies start with an assessment and then decide what to keep running.

Regulated sectors

Do rules apply to you?

Banks, insurers, telecoms and suppliers to government bodies may have extra security requirements from their regulators or clients. If that applies to you, tell providers which rules you must meet and ask about their experience with them.

Cloud

Your email is part of your network

For many companies the biggest risk is a stolen email password, not the office network. Ask providers to review the security settings of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace as part of the work.

Cybersecurity questions

Is my information safe when I send a request?

Providers first see a summary of your need without your name or contact details. We tell you who they are before sharing anything.

We are a small company. Do we really need this?

Small companies are attacked too, often through email. The self-check above shows where to start, and many fixes are simple settings.

How often should we test?

Many companies test at least once a year and after big changes, such as a new system or office. Ask providers what suits your size.

Do you recommend specific security firms?

We don’t publish rankings or recommend firms by name. Each request is matched with providers that fit it, and you learn their names before they get your details.
